Local Birkie medalist
Feb. 25: "American Birkenbeiner International nordic ski races held in Hayward wi this weekend, 4 local athletes place in top ten in their age brackets against 1000-1300 skiers. Age bracket results=Kyler Berg-2nd Korte skate race, Jake Egelhoff 6th Korte classic race, Michael Jarzin 1st Korte skate Joel Egelhoff (17) has a story of his own to tell unrelated to race results. Instead of skiing the 23 k race as planned, joel decided to skip the 23 k turnoff and ski the entire 54K (32.4 miles) Birkie! This is reserved for those age 18 and older. Joel says that he wasn't sure he would get a chance to do this while going to college so he decided to do it now. When he got to the finish tent to change and get his post race food they would not let him in because he had a Korte race bib on! Things got worked out and he is proud to show off his first American Birkebeiner finish medal!"
